Underneath the outer enamel of your teeth there are nerves, lymph and blood vessels. Root canals are very fine branches in the dentin from the pulp chamber down to the root.
Deep tooth decay, repeated dental treatments, cracks or trauma can cause inflammation
and
infection to the pulp's nerves and vessels. If left untreated an abscess can
spread to the area outside of the tooth or affect the bone around the tooth, causing
tooth loss.
Once the pulp is infected, the options for treatment are either: Root Canal Treatment or Extraction.
Root canal treatment cleans out infected pulp and repairs the damage so the tooth can be saved.
Indications that root canal treatment may be necessary are:
* prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold
* discolouration of the tooth
* swelling or tenderness of the tooth
* severe decay or an injury that creates an abscess
* spontaneous pain or throbbing while biting
